Finally, after a long time and through some inspirational push by co-players, the left 4 dead sound package is complete.
Alone, the sounds are very strange.
That is because I split them up in different channels. The sound engine in the game uses the left channel as the primary sound level (up-close) and the right side as delay sound level (distance)
It works perfectly in game, it should give your pistols some extra push and your automatic some interesting metal clicks.
Pipebomb(THUMP): Makes a louder noise, something the infected WOULD hear AND attack. Explosion is a tube THUMP mixed with an explosion. Keep in mind that the propane tanks also uses the explosion sounds from the pipebomb so don’t be surprised if you hear it there too. Also, there is something weird with the normal explosions in the game as they are very low in volume compare to were you stand. There a number of reasons for this, but until valve do something, there is hardly anything I can do.
Pistols(Doing it Akimbo Style): Now sounds powerful and you want to use them more, the sound is a large caliber magnum.
I replaced it with a heavier sound cos I was sick of the weak plastic gun sounds.
SMG(UZI): I replaced the sound with a more metallic version, it clicks more and the gun flare is large and powerful. It makes firing the UZI more interesting.
Shotgun(Zombie weapon classic): The shotgun was okay in my honest opinion from the get-go, but I wanted it to be more
personal, more “This is a shotgun, there are many like it, but this one is mine.” It became louder and a chamber for the shells was added.
ALSO: I changed the pumping and reloading sound as well to a more accurate and highly detailed sound.
Automatic Rifle(M16): I was sick and tired of the original sound and wanted something that had more metallic clicks (i’m a huge fan of metallic clicking machine guns) and so I played around with a normal rifle, added some chamber clicks and ejection of bullets from the chamber.
Automatic Shotgun(Body-Mower!): This one also sounded good from valves side. But, I needed a sound I could more easily distinguish in the frantic chaos of zombies attacking me. Knowing my team mates weapon of choice - has helped me before in the chaos. I know who to run to when the pandemonium commence.
ALSO: I redid the loading here too. It is a heavy metal click that a certain old shotgun a friend of mine got - makes when you load shells into the chamber. Remember, you can remove a sound you don’t like by just deleting them and removing the “copy” from the other files in the same folder.
Hunting Rifle(BOOM, scope shot!): I never use the hunting rifle myself cos I’m used to fast paced action. Some people do….and I try to keep myself away from them cos they suck during a horde attack. I found that the rifle audio that left 4 dead came with, was special….interesting….but boring after awhile.
So I replaced it with a more satisfying boom from an Anti-ammunition rifle, which btw, you are forbidden to use on human targets. (which is weird considering carpet bombing, tank shell and a nuke does pretty much more damage and are NOT forbidden to use on human targets.)
To install, extract the folders into your left4dead folder.
Example:
Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\
It will ask you if you want to replace the files that already exist.
Say yes.
If you want the original gunshot - replace the one
existing with the file that got copy in front of it, which is the original sound.
Here is a sound demo of all the sounds, I had Louis (my favorite character in L4D) help me out
Weapons in the order of their Appearance: Shotgun, SMG, Automatic Shotgun, Automatic Rifle, Hunting Rifle, Pistols, Pipebomb
